thanks Cubo for the reply , very appreciated....due to the long delivery of the RCF drivers I decided to park the project of the MKH230 and most likely built  some Cubo kick 15" ;-)
I've found the overall dimensions and shape of the MKH230 more difficult to handle and set up with my current system

T/S-parameter wise the RCF MB12G301 is a twin of the 18Sound 12ND830, which is neodymium but and therefore shouldn't have any problem fitting in the narrow space. For other drivers a Sketchup file might be a good idea.

Hello builders !

I was wondering if anyone have used an alternative driver for the MKH230 ...plans recommend the RCF MB12G301 which is the one I have ordered but I have just been informed by the seller that it has a 6 weeks delivery time. I was wondering if waiting on looking for an alternative ....maybe someone has tried and tested some other drivers that I can consider as optional.
Speaker plans seems to be designed around the RCF from a chassis point of view too so it may be hard to find another good fit , but maybe...

thanks !

As a rule of thumb, for mid bass and up: Always in the chamber but not in the horn (so not in front of the driver). I would keep it at that.

Hi Cubo ,

thanks for the reply as always...I missed it for a bit , I usually get a notification on my email but I may have missed that as well :-/

In the meantime I move forward with the project and I did as you them mentioned in your reply. I'm half way through the building on one MKH230....funny part is that you realized the size of these boxes once you start building them, which is why I really like all the cubos design, compact and strong.
I ended up using a 18mm plywood even if it's a single driver design, I think I could have gone with the 15mm and have a lighter box but when I redesigned it to cut the pieces on a CNC the 3 mm change was messing a bit with angles and mitred cut so instead of recalcualting everything I went the easier route and kept it 18mm...

now I have another point to consider, Have anyone used sound dampening material on the inner walls of this speaker ? I did used it on Cubo Kick 12" and I think it helped the overall sound I was wondering if I should do the same before I complete it....
if so, should the dampening material be applied on the inner walls around the driver and also in front of it ? Trying to avoid to put it in areas where it will be visible from the outside for cosmetic reasons.
Attached a quick sketch about where I'm thinking to apply it shown as red rectangles

thanks !!

If you want to have a single driver MKH-230, basically you have to take half the internal width of a double and add a side panel (don't count bracing here). As long as the bracing doesn't add a lot of volume or blocks anything, the exact shape and size is up to you. Keep in mind it's primary function though ;)

How's your French? Single MKH-230

Hello builders and soundsystem lovers

posting here something about the MKH230 design although the plans on the website for this design doesn't look like the MKH230 by Marco.O available on his profile in Hornsplan website.

MKB230 and MKH230 have the same plans here on Freespeakerplans but they are not, looks like someone has pointed this out already anyway

.I've been thinking about building some bass kick speakers based on the MKH230 model.Originally a double 12" box I'm looking at modifying the design to be used with a single 12" driver.
Still using a set of two speakers. It will be easier and lighter to move around than the version with double driver.
These are the main reasons why I'm looking at doing this and transportation with my current capabilities.

I'm currently using a custom built soundsystem playing Jamaican music from ska to roots on vinyl records.
The stack is made of 4 Cubo12" stacked on top of each other in set of two speakers per row. Over these I'm now using 2 Cubo Kick12" and 2 b&c design mid tops with 1 12" driver and 1" compression driver horn.

I've been quite happy with the overall sound so far, we play in small to medium spaces ( pub/bar type of room ) and most of times have to keep the sound to half of it's potential.
The MKH230 will replace the Cubo kicks, not because I'm not happy with them but mostly bcs I want to experiment more and build some different design..Anyone has done any mod like that to the MKH230 ?

I basically have moved the side wall of the double MKH230 to the center of the baffle panel ( where the bracing piece is on the original design ) then moved the bracing panel in the center between left and right sidewall. ( see below image for a quick visual reference on the sketch up model of the MKH230 )I'm thinking of adding an horizontal bracing as well in the middle of the vertical bracing just for the look of it ( thinking of giving a contoured profile to the bracing rather than the current plan where the panel is just straight) ....bad idea ?
Also...anyone using this kicks can spare some feedback ?

Looking at future expansion of this sound this choice may not be the wiser as I will have 4 kicks with 2 different design so not the best idea to use them all 4 together in a bigger set up but I guess that when I'll go that route I may look into using different bass speakers ( super scoops most likely ) and then design the kick section around those

thanks !

Wow man, thanks for the link to the box calculator! This may play into a twist I wanted to add the gig: Each of the four speakers will be driven by four separate special guitar pickups with very specific frequency bandwidths. If each of the four speaker enclosures were designed to have a high acoustical gain (or resonance?) at these four specific bandwidths, that would be the bawm!... That's like, acoustical crossover networks!... Heady stuff!

I would just design my own for reflex. WinIsd is a great resource to help design one or there is this online box calculator www.mh-audio.nl/ReflexBoxCalculator.asp

If you really want to go with a premade plan, you could try making a full range cab like a DM2 www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=dm2 . It would go higher than needed but I bet it would sound awesome for a bass cab.

bgrade replied the topic:

That seems like a pretty restrained range for a bass guitar. I would think a bass guitar would go lower than that. I would think you would want to get down at least to 60hz unless you are using a separate sub-bass cab too. On the top end I would try to hit at least 5K.

Personally I would go with a nice two or three way reflex box.

Does MKH-230 = MKB-230?
They look like the same plans.
Any other suggestions for a large bandwidth horn?
Any other suggestions for bass guitar speaker cabinet?

Hi there, I'm looking at building a pair of MTH-46lc and am interested in B&C 18NW100 drivers.
www.bcspeakers.com/products/lf-driver/18-0/8/18nw100

Can anyone please advise me on whether these are suitable for the MTH-46lc and how they would respond in terms of low end extension and sensitivity.

Could I expect a noticeable improvement over THE BOX SPEAKER 18-500/8-A

Hi Guys, This is Jason rice from PMR in Ohio....
many of you have loudspeakers with sufficient motors and magnetic strength to shove large cones around under compression in these folded bass horns, but many of you know (and have experienced), that some stronger motor strength speakers have the ability to "envelope" their cones under high internal pressures, our else flex, causing all sorts of distortions that you hear.....
The reason I am taking the time to contact you, is that I have a TON of OEM cone assemblies that were manufactured for some of the more famous names that you know, mainly for their high end speakers that cost hundred, almost a thousand dollars, and who can afford multiples of those???
welp, I have the CONE ASSEMBLIES available if anyone wants to take their existing frames, and install ultra stiff, ultra accurate high end cones in their speakers.... Contact me here or at pmreproductions@neo.rr.com if interested... I can help!!!
sincerely,-

Cubo 18

Cubo 18:
Cubo 18 is a multi purpose, stand alone bass bin that, like Cubo 15, will equal or out run a single 18" BR*, of similar size, from ~ 40 Hz and up in terms of sensitivity. Cubo 18 works with a wide variety of 18” drivers. It has a cut list from just over a single 18 mm*** sheet (244 x 122 cm) / (8' x 4') with a single angled cut. Cubo 18" realizes a cost effective, small and light weight enclosure following the KISS-principle.
Development:
In 2007 the first prototype was build and tested. Cubo 18" is the 5th prototype in a line of hybrids aiming at the achievements as stated above.  Cubo 18 Standard and Cubo 18 Extended will both work with a wide variety of drivers, if uncertain which one will be most suited, build Cubo 18 Extended or mail me at This email address is being protected from spambots. Footnotes: 18” drivers preferably with an EBP of 100 or higher; Fs (22-42 Hz), Qts (0.25 - 0.58), Vas (200 - 450 L) / (7.4 – 16.7 ft^3). Where EBP = Fs / Qts . Measurements will follow.

Cubo 18/15 (difference): Cubo 18 is 3 cm (/ 1 1/6th inch) deeper then Cubo 15. Due to phase similarities Cubo 18 and Cubo 15 can be  used together without noticeable issues. Cubo 18 has on average slightly more output for a given input in comparison with Cubo 15 (based upon electro-mechanical relatively similar drivers), especially between Fc high and Fc low, whilst Fc high and Fc low, remain similar (= cut-off frequency).

Hi,

If you're going for a new driver, I'd consider the 18NW100. My personal preference is:
  1. 18NW100
  2. RCF L18P400
  3. 18TBX100
The 18TBX100 is a good choice but I strife to get the lowest Qts, highest EBP driver possible.

As the V18-1000 is based on the PD.1850/1, the current PD.1850/3 is probably the closest in weight and performance. The 18DS115 is neodymium and can be seen as a step up in performance but like the 18IPAL, it will need amplifiers in excess of 2000 - 3000 W per driver to really showcase their difference. Up to about 1000 - 1500 W per driver of amplifier power I would consider neodymium drivers like the LF18N401, 18NLW9400 or the 18NW100. Their Qts is a bit higher to be considered true analogs of the V18-1000 but it's still in the right ball park. While they "only" have 4" voice coils, they're of a newer generation and typically weigh less than 10 kg.
DevFelix replied the topic:

I understand. It was clear to me that such non-neodymium drivers would make transport considerably more difficult. However, I first wanted to weigh what is possible without paying attention to the weight.

Are there drivers that deliver similarly good results, and maybe even be neodymium-loaded in the best case?

Im located in Germany.
Cubo15 replied the topic:

@oskarociak: If you already have it you might as well use it, it should take similar power as in the reflex but will have more output. It does benefit from a high pass filter around 35 - 40 Hz, due to the limited Xmax.

@DevFelix: Drivers like the V18-1000 are not very common and tend to be expensive as well (large voice coil and low Qts do that to any driver). The V18-1000 was basically a cheaper alternative for the PD.1850. Non- neodymium drivers like that are a b!tch to move though, you need to be in great shape to not mind.

Where are you located?

Hey Cubo,
great design!

The Gain SPL Diagram clearly shows that the case works very well together with the V18-1000.
Unfortunately, it is only available to a limited extent in my region. Is there a good alternative?

I never reversed polarity with the magnet visible (it sounded fine to me) but it also depends on the tops you're using, so you can always try both ways and have a listen.

The 18 Sound 18NTLW5000 does not fit (under normal circumstances) in Cubo 18, mounted with the magnet in the horn, due to the driver depth. However some changes can be made to make it fit. It does fit mounted with the magnet in the chamber, with some minor changes.

It does work best in Cubo 18 Extended, if you need help with making changes so it fits, send me an e-mail at: questionsaboutcubo at gmail dot com

@Dave305: From that list I would choose the FTR18-4080FD, it's a good driver for Cubo 18 Extended. I think you also e-mailed me that you wanted 30 Hz performance, in which case you're better off using Cubo Sub. However the FTR18-4080FD might be on the light side for all day 30 Hz performance (couldn't find Xmech though).

@Jack: The 18NLW9400 is the 18Sound equivalent of the B&C 18NW100, both rated at 1200 W AES, it would be my choice with an amplifier of roughly 1200 W or less. The 18TLW3000 is a very high power driver, with the 4 Ohm version looking best (better than the 8 Ohm version), it's a good choice if you have around 1800 W or more to power it with.

Hi All,

So after faffing around for too long I missed the boat on the 18nw100 availability and they're now on back order for at least 80 days from one of the few places that ship to NZ :-S I'd heard some positive things about the 18TLW3000 en.toutlehautparleur.com/18-sound-18tlw3...r-4-ohm-18-inch.html but it EBP (as you've defined Fs/Qts) is only 91hz. Is this going to make it a non-starter? Very open to other suggestions - am trying to balance getting something that will work well in the Cubo 18's (which I have the wood cut and ready for) and be ported into one of the paraflex designs once the price of timber goes back down in NZ (3 sheets per box at $280nzd a shot is a bit nuts!)

The 18NLW2400 is an 18 inch extended low frequency loudspeaker designed for high SPL subwoofer applications in either a reflex, bandpass or horn loaded configuration. Compared to our industry standard 18LW1400, the 18LW9400 provides higher maximum SPL, increased program power handling and lower power compression. In order to furtherly increase power handling and reduce power compression figure, 18NLW9400 uses the same voice coil ventilation technology developed for our flagship 9000 neodymium transducer series.

Apparently, they couldn't choose it's final name then. Now it's known as the 18NLW9400 ;)

Both the Ciare Cw455 and the 18NLW9400 will work best in Cubo 18 Extended.

Best regards Cubo
