tube amps

Hey any one out there still using tube amps
have a look at a couple of mine attached

I bet they have a nice warm sound...... Good stuff

What power do you have?

the kt88 amp you see is 500 watts rms...to get this from the kt,s they are run at 760 volts on thier anodes and 400 volts on the screens
with a regulated supply...something that the back i the day amps did not have....so no flashovers and runs 4 15" w CABS
The big piece you see has 12x pl509 tubes and puts out 1050 watts rms....same curcuit...but seperate regulator for each pair of tubes
this is running 4x X1 subs at present
have 300 watt piece for treble and 200 watt ultra linear for upper mid,am workin on a 2000 watt plus piece at the moment...in the early stages
should complete by spring
all built and designed by myself....wanted the sound quality without the reliability probs and they deliver

Wow ,them amps look the business. Are you using the G.E.C. class B push pull circuit for the 500w and the 1050w? I use a 2 x 100w 6l6 amp for home use but for playing out this would probably only be ok for playing upper mids or tops. With the price of valve's nowadays I salute you for using valves especially since your building your own amps. Would love to hear the 1050w or even better the 2000w powering some 18" sub's in Tony's scoop's.

Both curcuits operate in class ab1...my own curcuits...both specific to the tube type of each amp
Class B is possible with a 50% power increase possible at the expense of increased complexity
more driver tubes more heat bigger mains transformer etc...increased crossover pont distortion allso
Ab1 tetrode connected is the most efficient scheme...1050 watts is sufficient to drive 4 scoops to destruction

1050w would be great for even powering 8 scoops!!!!!!! A well known Reggae sound system (Jah Shaka) used to run a valve power amp with around 20 KT88's running around 16 or more 18" subwoofers. The amp had a separate psu in one chassis and the tray of KT88's and a giant o/p transformer in another. The amp was based on the classic GEC parallel push pull design which was a class B design. To this day no other amp Ive heard has that special raw sound , the only way to describe would be roaring bass line . This probably had a lot to do with the distortion the amp was producing but i just loved the sound.

the reason it sounds this way is that it is just not powerfull enough
to drive the 18x18 inch drivers so it goes into output stage clipping early
I have never seen the class b circiut to which you refer
unless you mean the Gec 1000 watt circuit for triodes
there parallel push pull circuits that i have seen have all been AB1
I belive that his amp is running in ab1...did not see the driver transformer required
to drive the grids of the kt88 positive...and class B would be an innefficient
use of tetrodes.much more power would be available with triodes in class b at
the same voltages
...His power is somewhere around 1250 watts max...If you know this circuit
please forward the info so that i can check it out
Largest Amp that i have heard of in sound system use was owned by Jack ruby
I JA And had 40 x kt88 in it and was carried around in the back of a truck
where it stayed....this would have been somewhere around 2500 watts max
