Cubo Kick

Cubo Kick is a midbass bin to enforce the Cubo series or any other sub bass cabinet in the kick bass region. Like all Cubo models, Cubo Kick is designed to offer maximum performance when used in a stand-alone operation.

Cubo Kick 15 is the largest at 62 x 62 x 62 cm (H x W x D), aimed at 80 - 200 Hz, it has the most output in the 120 Hz area, for that well known "pressure on the chest kinda feeling". Not only do the frontal dimensions match with Cubo 15, 18, 21 and Sub, but the output is also high enough to use Cubo Kick in a 1:2 ratio (1.5:1 for live music). On top of two Cubo 15's it will raise the minimal height for the high mid top to 180 - 190 cm, bringing it well above the crowd ears. The cut sheet fits from a single sheet of 122 x 244 cm, 18 mm 13-ply Baltic birch is preferred. Originally designed around the 18Sound 15ND930. Other drivers that will work:

- Eminence Kappa Pro 15
- Faital Pro 15FH520
- Faital Pro 15FH500

The width of the cabinet can easily be modified, Cubo Kick 15 at 45 cm wide is best used in combination with 12" drivers to get the middle way, 100 - 220 Hz when used stand alone.

Cubo Kick 12 is the smallest cabinet at 45 x 45 x 50 cm (H x W x D). Initial measurements show it's capable of 110 - 250 Hz stand alone, a bit below 100 Hz when stacked in multiples. With the same frontal dimensions as Cubo 12, the output is high enough to use Cubo Kick in an 1:2 ratio (1.5:1 for live music). The cut sheet fits easily from a single sheet of 122 x 244 cm, 15 mm 11-ply Baltic birch is preferred. Designed around the 18Sound 12ND830. Other drivers that will work:

It's advisable to use dampening material on all the walls in the rear chamber, except the baffle and without restricting air flow to the driver and reflex ports.

Cubo Kick 18 has been designed on request and is basically a Cubo Kick 15 redesigned to suit an 18" driver, giving it the exact same outer dimensions as Cubo 18. The increased rear chamber gives it a slightly lower tuning and the slightly longer horn makes it perhaps "the most 120 Hz" design out there.

That's great to hear, I'll go for it! I have one more little question. I'd like to increase the width of the cabinet from 62 cm tot 63,6 cm (so they perfectly fit on my subs), will this have a big effect on the output?

I've never looked at the 18LW2400 that way but it's actually a pretty good (Cubo) kick driver (low Le, medium Vas, EBP > 100, good BL).

@ Marcuzzo: Looking at the Qts and Vas of the B&C, it is not really well suited for small rear chambers like Cubo Kick 12, I would adjust Cubo Kick 15 to 45 cm width and roll with it.
The same goes for the adaptation you saw, a 15" driver with a Qts x Vas product nearing that of a the average 12" is going to be happier in that situation than one that is not. With the right driver it is something that could work but it's going to be situation specific as well.

Good morning, I have some 15hpl76s and I'd like them to go as high as possible. I saw that you can reduce the width to increase the frequency. How much should I reduce it?
I also saw a group of people who adapted a 15" woofer to the 12" cubo by modifying the front panel cutout and enlarging the baffle to 40cm with the same dimensions as the 15" cubo cutout (18cm). Is this a good idea?

The Xmax is 2.4 mm, that's really low. The Kappa 12 is already low with 3.2 mm.

The Eminence Kappa Pro 12A does share the name with the Kappa Pro 15 but has worked out a little bit harder in the gym ever since. It should be able to get down to 100 Hz in singles but is pretty much guaranteed to do so in pairs, or (very close to a solid wall (2,0 pi radiation). I would first try it as is, playing with filter steepness and such, with closing of a port as a last resort.

16 mm ply is theoretically at least 2 times stiffer than 12 mm ply, if you're unsure what to use, make the heavier cabinet! That being said 12 mm will work.

Thanks for all your work. I'm trying to fill in a gap in my system, my sub is 100Hz at -3db and 110Hz at -10db. I want to feel the kick, and my tops don't cut it. Due to space constraints, I'm looking to build a Cubo Kick 12.

2. Realise that the Kick 12 is designed for 110Hz - 250Hz, but can it be tweaked to punch a bit lower, at 100Hz? Ideally I'd fill all the gap from 100Hz to 220Hz or so. Is blocking a port viable for the 12, as suggested in some other replies?

3. 15mm birch ply is hard to come by here in NZ, 16mm is standard or 12mm (which is far more cost effective). Aside from tweaking measurements to suit, would using 12mm ply instead of the 16mm affect sound characteristics and output?

If you need just one dimension altered, the width is by far the easiest (just reduce it). All coupling options you mentioned will give small deviations, 0.75 dB less here, +1.1 dB there, etc. It's nothing to loose sleep over, just experiment till you find something that is to your liking

if i need to resize these with either width or height to 22 7/8", how do they best couple? port to port? horn to horn? or vertical? or does it matter? ill be using some black widow kadt 1s that i already have and theyll be crossed from 100 to 2-300 between my subs and tops. thank you.

The Celestion 15-FTR4080F is a good choice for 45 cm width.The lower limit of Cubo Kick at 45 cm wide raises to 90 Hz, the upper limit is usually extended up to 220 Hz. So a little bit less low end and a bit more top end in return.

If you cross the fbt at 100 Hz, that means you also cross the kick at 100 Hz. For the best result experiment with the crossover frequnecy till it sounds right, typically between 80 - 100 Hz. The blow to the chest is indeed centered around 120 Hz.

Celestion doesn't have a picture with dimensions for the 15-FTR, so it's difficult to predict but usually the magnet doesn't touch the rear panel. If it does let me know by then as the problem is easily solved.

(Do you recommend a woofer, which fits into the speaker without creating problems of modifying the enclosure, which does not hit its magnet on the frame when closed, perhaps without spending a lot of money) I read that I should feel the blow to the chest from 120 Hz in then, right? so if fbt I put it at 100hz at how many hz should I put the football cube? What are the advantages at 45cm, and what disadvantages do I have at 45cm?can I add handles?, what if I want to add a built-in amplifier?

The 15LB100 is a good all round driver, it's geared a bit more towards bass than kick but they'll work in both Cubo 15 and Cubo Kick 15. In the latter for 80 - 200 Hz.

Yes, you can make Cubo Kick 45 cm wide, leave the height, depth and everything else the same. I would cross it around 100 Hz to the fbt 115SA. Do you know what loudspeaker you want to use in Cubo Kick?

After seeing your reply, I bought and fitted up the 18sound drivers this morning as I managed to pick them up for $500aud (vs $700+ to have the 2226's re-coned)... and with a party in 2 weeks I was keen to get them online.

They don't disappoint!

The benefit of refurbishing the 2226's is that you know what they sound like, the 15LW1200 is different as it's more of a horn oriented driver. It might drop a dB below 100 Hz but loads the horn better. As it's a high BL horn driver it can sound a bit more aggressive but as Cubo Kick is a bit more horn than reflex it's a good choice.

Hello Mr. Cubo,

Firstly, I want to thank you for your work and your commitment to helping all of us build our own rigs!

I built a couple of cubo kicks a year or two ago for obvious reasons (more kick!)... and they look so good, I modelled the rest of the rig's grills to match.

I live in Australia where the choice of drivers is limited and expensive, but ended up acquiring a pair of second hand JBL 2226's. While they have some effect, they're clearly worn out and are not doing the cabinet justice.

I am faced with the choice of re-coning them, or replacing them. To that end, I have found someone local selling a pair of 18sound 15w1200's in good condition (specs are attached).

Would these be suitable for cubo kicks, or am i better off having the 2226's refurbished?
