Driver upgrade carlsbro Orion 12s was created by styla247
Hi there guys I'm after some advice I currently have a pair of carlsbro Orion 12s they are 200watts each. I'd like to upgrade there internals so they are 400watts each or there abouts. I havnt got a clue about what drivers to use but I know I will need a 12inch low / mid driver sum sort of compression driver and a new crossover.
Could anyone please specify some new internals for me.
By the way these are passive versions.
Cheers

Be very careful which drivers actually fit.
These plastic cabs have the lip of the driver resessed. If they are pressed steel then a cast probably won't fit.
I would personally sell the cabs and go for something else.
For instance, there were some Mach, 300/400 watt Beyma loaded cabs on SP recently for 200 a pair.

If you go from 200W to 400W you actually only gain 3db of headroom.
What are you actually trying to acheive by upgrading these cabinets?
What power amp are you using and what is its power rating?
What is the PA setup you are using them in?
Have you got bass bins yet?
If you go 2 way active with bass bins, you will gain lots of headroom on your system.

Hi there I'm a mobile Dj I have built sum cubo 15s for the subs at 600watts each. And at the moment I use the carlsbros for mid tops I feel that they arnt loud enough when compared to the subs. So what do you suggest I do. At the moment the carlsbros are powered by a 400watt amp @ 200watts a Chanel on the carlsbros.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Cheers

You did not mention what active crossover you are using? Settings?
A 400W amp is probably rated for 200W channel at 4 ohms - so will be probably 120 / 140w per channel into 8 ohms.
A 1000W amp would deliver about 300W per 8 ohm channel. This would give you a bit more headroom. Maybe 3db. I would expect your 200W cabs to be OK on that power especially if you are using them with a crossover.
A 1000W amp would also be able to run 4 mid tops for more headroom.
Maybe you could find another matching 400w amp and run them in bridge mode to get 400W per 8 ohm cab.
You would need to ensure that you are not clipping the amplifier to avoid damaging your speakers.

The crossover i use is a behringer cx3400 and it is set to croos at about 150Hz 2 way.
the amp that powers the carlsbros is 200 watts a chanel an 8 ohms so 400 watts in total. if i used a more powerfull amp the speakers would be ok as long as i didnt clip the amp.
cheers

Ok!
The Behringer is a good unit for the money.
I would suggest as an upgrade path
1, A decent sized Mid Top Amp
2, Maybe go 3 way active. Either by modifying your existing cabinets, or buying / building new mid tops. Use your 400W amp for the HF, and use your 3 way crossover.
