What would cause an amp to blow on a 12v rig

Hey all,

had a a mixer blow on me whilst doing a small outdoor event, whilst using the following setup

85Ah Deep cycle battery > 600w Inverter > 6way surge protector

Mixer/cdjs and 300w Carslbro proline power amp running off inverter

2 x 200w Carlsbro tops runing off the amp.

Got about 3/4 hour use out the mixer and then it died. Was making a odd buzzing sound whilst switched on for a bit. didnt notice this at first,

inverter was earthed, was sitting directly on the floor,

anyone any idea what might of caused it to blow.

poor quality power inverter would be first guess, strange no sine wave signall type effects av a tendency to do no good to audio equipment

I would at least try to use an isolation transformer to hopefully smooth out the stepped wave output from the inverter, i am actually going to do some tests on this in a couple of weeks, because i have been wondering how best to smooth out a stepped sine wave, but then i dont know how well inverters cope with an inductive load....?

I'd also get a more beefy one! I think your inverter could have started acting up when it had that big load on it.

Inverters, especially cheap ones really don't like big inductive loads like power amplifiers!

i think you are asking to much of your battery aswell
may also be worth geting a 12v amp

id imagine the ac output on your inverter was not a good enough sine wave. have a search for some good car amplifiers andmixers that will accept a dc input. there are quite a few buget mixers that come with a 12volt 'wall wart' adapter. just give it a direct 12volt supply from your battery. you will also gain valuable efficiency by removing the inverter from the chain.

if you use just cd players for the sets, have a look at a numark all in one cd mixer box. a lot of them have a 12volt dc input.
