DIY Sound System for Record Store

Hello,

I'm interested in building a sound system for a local skate and record shop. We have DJ's come through and play in store parties for up to 50 people. It's a small area (50 m2) but we are interested in having an optimum system, full range and bass heavy.

Locally we are able to buy P.Audio speakers.

I've thought about building 2 full range speaker systems 15" + 1.5" with a passive crossover.

Additionally, we thought about building 2 Cubo 18's.

So, it would look something like this:

L-R mix --> 2 way Active Crossover ---> Hi Freq. Output --> Amp--> Passive Crossover --> 15" and 1.5"
____________________________---> Low Freq. Output --> Amp--> Cubo's

Do you guys think this set up would be a good one? I am open to suggestions since I have never built a system before.
Would really appreciate any input on this.

That sounds viable, although personally, for a small system in a small area, I might just do some nicely efficient 10s or maybe 12s in the mid top. 15s don't usually sound all that great up to the crossover point with a hf driver.

From the feedback I've been receiving I am considering switching to 12" mids. Oh, and only one cubo.

Sounds fine. Don't over complicate the tops. Nicely designed reflex will sound great in that space. Make sure you have them tuned to meet the cubos (should be able to hit 100hz or a little lower). Cubo should be able to do 40 to 100hz just fine. Cubos should work well too. If you build one and feel that it needs a little more oomph, should not be too hard to do another when you have the money for it. I imagine to get a nice bassy mix with one cubo, you will need to hold the top back a bit from what it could do, or else corner load the cubo.

Yeah, I'll probably do that with a single Cubo, and if needed build a second one as you said. Mid Tops I'll probably go 12" + 1" ...something like this:

Nice Job, How did the mid tops turn out did they go as low as was suggested by the designer?

I reckon they're doing just fine. They can even be pushed a bit passed 100hz, of course not as flat. It is a good sounding little reflex box, with a bit of EQ. Working pretty damn well for our space and budget. Definitely not the best sounding and could use improvement. We obviously went for cheap P.Audio 12"'s and Comp's. So definitely room for upgrading

Now, the Cubo Sub, fucking great. We're using an Eminence Delta Pro for that. It's a bigger box than the Cubo 18", we have the magnet in the horn. So it can go past 40hz.

Still figuring stuff out but right now we have it 30hz to 100hz (both 24dB-LR), Then 100hz to 1.6khz, this is passive x-over 12dB-BW (I think). and then 1.6khz to whatever we can get.

We haven't put any dampening material surrounding the compression drivers upper chamber, should we?

I only use dampening material on kicks, its personal preference, just give it a go and listen to the change (y)
