Ta for the offer but there's no need mate, I'll use opensource variants where possible.
In fact, the plan is to run XP in a virtual machine within a Linux distro, so I can set the wireless network device up to operate as a router/access point and have full control.

thats cool, I like to do that as well, but for VNC, this enterprise version has made me quite happy and I'm willing to use it over an open remote control software. Enterprise has encryption and all of that jazz, and it's quite snappy with the new 'mirror driver' they are using. WAY more responsive than prev. version. not sure how it'd perform in a VM though

You can buy a box which has wireless lan and RS232 on it designed for exactly this purpose. Lantronix is one manufacturer which comes to mind. You basically install a driver for a virtual Com port on your PC, software thinks the LMS is connected directly but actually it's on the end of a network. I've done it for other applications...

More boxes to go wrong though, and harder to fix on the job than something software based if there are issues.
