Hello! First System - Cubo15 & SMT212? was created by joshworthy
Hi,

I'm new here and have been pondering for the last few weeks as to which cabs I will build for a semi-portable setup.
I've played with bits of PA systems before but want to build something which is high quality, will last and sound great!

-It will mainly be used for Disco/House/Techno
-I'd like to keep the cost of the drivers and 2way x overs (for the tops) under about £800
-I am going to use this inside and outdoors (100 to 300 people)

I want to be able to bundle it all in a small-ish van and came to the conclusion that 4 x Cubo 15" and 2 x SMT212 tops would be a good compromise.
Having the 4 cubo cabs would give me the option to either stack a single SMT212 on a single cubo15 or setup the other cubo 15 for extra kick...

My current kit to drive the rig:
1 x Ecler APA2000, 2 x 4ohm 940w or bridged 2kw 8ohm (Was thinkin this could drive the subs either two cubo15 8ohm or run each channel parallel if two cubo's either side). I'll get another 2 chan amp to drive the tops.

I have no doubt that two SMT212 wil handle all the mid and high I need but will 2/4 Cubo15 serve me for sub / kick /low end duties?

What do you guys think!?

Regards,

I would not count on the Cubo 15's to do the kick-duty. It's generally good up to 100 - 110 Hz (though some people cross it higher). If you experience a gap (or lack of kick) between Cubo 15 and the SMT212, you could add a Cubo Kick 15 (or 12). I would just start with your suggested setup and only if it's not satisfactory add the Cubo Kicks. Your suggested amplifier setup looks all good.

Thanks Cubo! Very helpful advice!

I've been looking for a driver which is a little more cost effective than the kappa's specified for the cubos and found these:
P-Audio E15-600S 15 Inch 600W Low Frequency Loudspeaker Driver
at a very reasonable plrice! Will they work ok in the cubo15?

cheers

Personally I wouldn't cross them very high at all, between 80 - 100 Hz at best, as I'm not a big fan of drivers with a high Qts and low Vas. Except that, all other specs look very good and a definite improvement over the Kappa's.

Best regards
