file 5K Torroidial Amp performance on 13A Socket

Various 5K amps peform differently, when on 13A/32A with varied mains sag.

CA18 I know personally will clip early on saggy mains ring, however few other 5K amps do not.

Would have thought CA18 with lots of smoothing would cope, but I know of few other big amps that are not as susceptible.

Is it due to huge number of transistors per channel needing hefty current?

No it is often down to the way that the driver stages are powered. Amps with isolated driver rails will sometimes prevent nasties from entrering the sound for longer as the voltage sags.

Given similar topologies i.e. class AB, H, G etc. the amount of current required by the amplifier should not change that much whether you have 10 or 16 devices per channel.

Ray, Although I have heard both amps they were not being pushed hard so I cannot comment.

They both sound very nice, better in quality than MA5000VZ.

However, the QSC does'nt clip as early as the CA18 on saggy mains.

CA18 is 2 step Class-G and QSC RMX5050 is 3-Step Class-H.

Therefore 3 step Class-H QSC will waste less power into dissipated heat than 2 Step Class-G/H CA-18, hence less Sag on the mains. smiley1

3 Step class-H has much higher efficiency than 2 Step-Class-H

The owners of that forum have big "VOID" in their knowledge which is very Dangerous smiley2
