I always feel a little simpathetic towards amp builders, especially on a small scale. It's a problem knowing what your little work of art is doing until you hook it up with a speaker. And there lies a problem. What speaker do you use. The point of reference is hard to achieve sometimes. If you are listening for bass, how low must the bass cab go and in what room etc. I realize that AB testing in any environment, tells you something but not everything.
By the way, I had a look at the amp as soon as I got there, and when I heard it, it sounded fine. But once again, I had no point of reference, because I didn't know what the cabs should sound like in the first place.
I think that at the next meet, we will have the chance to organize a proper agenda. I got there and didn't do anything. I was happy to be there and just talk to everyone.

Peace and goodwill to all speaker builders

I didn't realise. I did peer inside and presumed it was a pro amp with the lid off smiley20

Cheers for the replies. It was a shame there weren't really any suitable cabinets there to test the amp on. Needed some passive mid-tops really to run it up properly.

Hopefully I'll get a few built up properly in the next month or so. Once I've got the power supply and protection onto a PCB and not wired point-to-point it'll look a bit more presentable and also easier to assemble.

This amp is very much just a slightly more advanced prototype, I won't be building any more than the PCB's I have here. There are various issues with it but the only way to learn properly is to do it, analyse your mistakes then try to get it right the next time round.

Chris, one of the big disappointments for me was not getting to meet you and chew the cud so to speak. I would have enjoyed the Dire Straits as well!!!!!!. I have to say I was very impressed when I learnt that they were you own pcb's etc. Keep up the good work.

I would also liked to have heard the band-pass boxes (hopefully with an open mind) and met Tony ASS whose straightforward views on speaker design and indeed also life I always appreciate.

Promise to get down to the next one even if I have to hire transport.

Hats off to all that made it possible

Tony

Very nice! smiley32

Thats the kind of level I'm trying to get up to.
I've only just started out with the electronics stuff really so I've got a long way to go yet.

I think I've mostly got my head around power supplys and will be building one as soon as I remember to get the parts for it.
(It's only someone else's design that I modified but I'm mainly doing it just as a learning exercise)

Also building a crappy little amp kit I got from Maplins, again, just to get some experience and hopefully understand it a bit better.
